[Essential Knowledge 4.C.1] At equilibrium position, all of the energy of the system is stored in the magnetic field as magnetic potential energy, and this energy equals the gravitational force component on the glider parallel to the track. We measure the angle using our phone or the angle measurer in the lab (Figure 3) Watch NASA astronaut Joe Acaba demonstrate kinetic and potential energy on the International Space Station by showing how an object’s potential energy change Elastic Potential Energy Lab Activity SPH4C Materials: 5 N, 20 N, and 50 N spring scales, various masses, ruler Part 1: The Spring Constants 1. Suspend a 100 g mass from the 5 N spring scale. Record the weight of the mass in Table 1 below. 2. Use the ruler to measure the extension (stretch) of the spring scale.

2. Identify three examples of items that can store potential energy. 3. POTENTIAL ENERGY – BOUNCE BALL LAB Name: Energy cannot be created or destroyed. Stored energy is called potential energy, and the energy of motion is called kinetic energy. Potential energy changes as the height of an object changes due to gravity; this is called gravitational potential energy.

Kinetic energy is energy an object has because of its motion. A ball held in the air, for example, has gravitational potential energy. Kinetic & Potential Energy Lab Purpose: To use previous knowledge of velocity to perform kinetic energy calculations To practice using a triple beam balance.

The Potential and Kinetic Energy Inquiry Lab is a hands-on activity that is differentiated for advanced, on-level, and modified middle school students. Students will be introduced to the types of kinetic and potential energies and asked to identify which are present in a photograph. This lab rotation requires two days to complete. Students develop an understanding of the importance of citing textual evidence to strengthen a claim as they construct written responses based on a series of lab stations focusing on kinetic energy and energy transfer.
